HighPointe Academy: Higher Education for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
HighPointe Academy is a 12-month, non-academic program for individuals with intellectual disabilities to obtain Appropriate Independence. This is defined as supported self-sufficiency that is aligned with the strengths of each individual and guided by the HighPointe mission to enable our clients to Pursue Personal Growth. This independence is linked with dignity and empowerment.
Our clients want to grow, learn, and experience new things. So do we. So do you. That’s why every program we offer incorporates these key values:
- Meaningful Choice: Our clients are given daily opportunities to make meaningful choices based on their dreams, experiences, or personal goals. Their life choices that do not compromise health and safety are respected and valued.
- Increasing Independence: Pursuing personal growth means offering the services and support our clients need to achieve ever-increasing levels of independence. Our programs are designed to provide a high degree of flexibility and choice based on the interests, preferences and strengths of each individual.
Helping people to have RICH and FULL lives
At the HighPointe Academy, we offer extensive and sequential education building on ideas associated with helping people to have rich and full lives. We bring these ideas to people directly associated with HighPointe in the work of promoting equity, inclusion and full participation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We have been intentional in helping people prepare increasingly for taking leadership roles in many ways, and we know that our activities will help prepare many people for important roles of responsibility and leadership in the work of promoting the well-being, contribution and social value of those who live on the margins of society.
The Academy staff will place high expectations on each of its clients and will help them to be successful. The Academy utilizes competency-based training methods and will require each client to meet enrollment standards prior to admission. Our curriculum is focused not only on basic living skills, but also guides each client to gain the ability to be flexible and prepared to interact in a fast-moving and complex community.
